I Have a Question for Bloggers and Readers

On Saturday I attended my local Heart of Texas RWA meeting. While at lunch, we discussed blogging and how important it was for the person blogging to respond to their reader's comments. Until recently, I've always tried to do this, but then I got to wondering, how many people actually check to see if I responded and do they really care if I do or not.

So, let me hear from you. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Thanks for Reading and Writing!

Linda

  1. As a reader, I think that if the owner of the post wants to comment back that is up to them. I think that if the person has time they should look to see what someone had commented and if there is a question to respond back to that question. Time is very limited to a lot of us so it makes it very hard to leave comments and for the writer of the post to respond back to every comment left.

  2. When I comment, I expect a response. I do on my blog. The person commenting took the time stop by so I kind of feel obligated to comment back.

This is a good question, Linda!

  4. All good points, Becky. How did we all get so busy?

Judith, I like to respond too. Do you go back and check to see if the blogger responded?

    I agree, Amber.

    Thank you all for commenting.

  5. I only go back to check if the blogger responded to my comment if it was particularly important (in my opinion) or part of a discussion. I usually field my own responses on my blog by if I think the comment was meant for a response from me.

  6. I love blogs that allow follow up posts sent to the commentor if they check the box. On those blogs, I expect a reply. I always check back on my blog and respnd to the commentor, which once or twice has actually opened a dialogue and led to a new follower/fan rather than just a one time comment. So as both a blogger and a blog reader, I think it's polite and often expected.

  7. Good question. I try to respond, but I honestly don't know if anyone is coming back to see the response.

When I leave a comment, unless I ask a question, I usually don't go back.

  8. In my opinion, an emphatic yes. If a follower has taken the time to respond, acknowledge that person. Even, a short answer is better than nothing. What if your follower asks a question? What if your follower states an affirmative or a negative point? Should we not behave in a professional manner? Often when we face negatives, we can turned them into positives, then let the status die a natural death. Truly, I've only seen one on another blog and it was handled appropriately. Enough of my thoughts! Linda, you've always done very well and you already know I look up to you! :)

  9. Same for me, LuAnn. Every once in a while I'll go back.

Lilly, my blog doesn't have that feature. I'll see if there is one I can activate. You're correct on it being polite.

Same for me, Clover. I wonder the same thing.

  10. Excellent points, Susan, especially on turning a negative point to a positive. You're awfully nice to say so, Susan. Thank you!

  11. I comment back and check the blog for a few days to catch the late readers. Comments from the blogger make me feel the blog and readers are important.

  12. Interesting post, Linda.

I always respond to commentors and sometimes contact them on their own blog, if they've asked a question or are a new follower - I don't always manage it, and I'd like to do it for all commentors - but there just aren't enough hours in the day! I do try to respond to each and every comment though. I don't always manage to check back on blogs I've commented on to see if the blogger left a reply, but I do try - and tick the box when there's he option to be informed of 'follow up replies'.

I think it's only courteous to respond to comments wherever possible - and this goes for being a 'guest blogger' on someone else's blog as well.

By the way, even if the orginal sender of the comment doesn't come back to see if you've replied, subsequent comentors will see your response and this surely creates a good impression, don't you think?

  13. And those lage comments do come in sometimes, don't they, Mary. And yes, if we want them to come back, they need to know they are important. Thanks for commenting.

  16. When I leave a comment, I expect them to come to my blog and comment also. Not everyone does... so I don't usually go back to their blog. Why waste my time. We all want some blog luvin.

  22. I always respond to comments on my own blogs, Linda, and I try to remember to go back and check for a response when I leave comments on others. Makes it a more interactive experience, as well as being courteous.
